Aliyev Meets US Congressional Delegation to Discuss Peace, Trade, Section 907, and Future Cooperation
On January 4, Ilham Aliyev, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, received a delegation from the United States in Baku. The delegation included Markwayne Mullin, a member of the US Senate Armed Services Committee (Republican from Oklahoma); Jason Smith, Chairman of the House Committee on Ways and Means (Republican from Missouri); Ronny Jackson (Republican from Texas); and Jimmy Panetta (Democrat from California). The US lawmakers expressed gratitude for the reception and stated that the development processes they observed in Baku had left a strong impression on them.
The delegates conveyed their congratulations to the head of state on the progress achieved in Washington regarding the advancement of the peace agenda between Azerbaijan and Armenia. Ilham Aliyev expressed appreciation for the remarks and described the agreements reached as historic, particularly emphasizing the role of US President Donald Trump in this process . Aliyev underscored that Azerbaijan would continue its efforts to promote regional peace, noting that trade relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia had already been established, with Azerbaijani oil products exported to Armenia and wheat from Kazakhstan and Russia transiting through Azerbaijani territory.
The President of Azerbaijan stated that Section 907 of the Freedom Support Act does not correspond to the current level of bilateral relations, welcomed the decision by the US President to suspend its enforcement, and expressed hope that members of Congress would continue efforts toward its complete abolition. Both sides also emphasized the positive development of Azerbaijan–US relations and noted the broad opportunities to expand cooperation in political, economic, energy, defense, education, and information technologies.
