Armenia and Iran Deny Alleged $500 Million Arms Deal

On 25 July the Armenian Defence Ministry denied reports that Armenia had allegedly signed an agreement with Iran on the purchase of arms and military equipment. Defence Ministry spokesman Aram Torosyan dismissed the reports as groundless, saying: "We do not respond to publications with far-fetched contents."
On 26 July, Iranian Ambassador to Yerevan Mehdi Sobhani also denied the existence of any military contract between Iran and Armenia. Sobhani described the source of this information as "unreliable media known for publishing false information and biased analysis" of the situation in Iran. He stressed that the purpose of such news is to undermine the development of friendly relations between Iran and regional countries. Sobhani said: “Iran supports the establishment of peace and stability and economic development in the Caucasus region.”
Notably, the London-based Iran International TV channel, which opposes the Iranian authorities, recently claimed that Yerevan and Tehran had signed a $500 million arms deal. The channel claimed that Armenia had purchased various types of Iranian-made drones and anti-aircraft missile systems as part of the deal.
