Armenia Considers Banning Russian TV Channels

Amid increasing tensions between Yerevan and Moscow, High-Technology Minister Robert Khachatryan on Thursday suggested that the retransmission of state-run Russian TV channels in Armenia could potentially be banned.
Khachatrian noted, “All scenarios are being discussed, but no decision has yet been made.”
Robert Khachatryan referred to a 2020 Russian-Armenian agreement that permitted Russia's two main federal channels and the Kultura TV station, affiliated with one of them, to have slots in Armenia's national digital package available to viewers nationwide. He mentioned that the agreement outlines actions to be taken in the event of violations. He stated that "relevant steps" will be taken without providing further details.
A lawmaker from PM Nikol Pashinyan’s party made a similar proposal last month, and the Armenian government is reportedly considering it. Armenian parliamentarian Lusine Badalyan emphasized the necessity of disconnecting Russian TV channels within the country. She cited concerns that the content aired by these channels is starting to pose a national security threat.
