Armenian Deputy FM Robert Abisoghomonyan, on a working visit to Brussels, met with Olof Skoog, Deputy Secretary General for Political Affairs at the European External Action Service (EEAS). The meeting focused on the steadily expanding and increasingly ambitious agenda of Armenia-EU relations. Both sides underscored the need for sustained political dialogue, deeper sectoral cooperation, and the broader strategic partnership that has gained momentum in recent years.

According to the Foreign Ministry, the officials reviewed opportunities for cooperation within international organizations and discussed sector-specific initiatives, including collaboration in security and defense and joint efforts to address hybrid threats. They also exchanged views on a wide range of regional and global issues where Armenia and the EU share interests.

Abisoghomonyan briefed Skoog on the agreements reached on August 8 in Washington, highlighting their significance for unblocking regional transport and advancing regional stability. He also presented Armenia’s “Crossroads of Peace” initiative, noting its potential to enhance connectivity across the South Caucasus and support wider regional cooperation.

The Deputy FM delivered remarks at the event “Towards 2030: Turning Nature Goals into Action,” emphasizing Armenia’s commitment to advancing global biodiversity goals ahead of COP17. He reaffirmed that Armenia is committed to hosting a transparent, inclusive, and collaborative COP17, stressing that the conference’s success depends on broad participation from Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity, as well as civil society and expert communities.

Abisoghomonyan highlighted the importance of COP17 in the context of the first global review of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, calling it a crucial milestone for assessing progress and accelerating implementation. He also underlined the urgent need to secure adequate and predictable financing for biodiversity, pointing out the persistent global funding gap.

The event was organized by the Embassy of Armenia in Belgium together with the UNDP Brussels Office, bringing together EU institutions, diplomats, think tanks, and international financial institutions to discuss aligning policy, finance, and implementation toward 2030 biodiversity targets.
