Armenia Explores EU Alignment Amidst Worsening Ties with Kremlin

Armenia’s leadership is contemplating seeking membership in the European Union, according to Armenia’s Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan, who mentioned this during an interview with Turkish state television aired over the weekend.
“Taking into account all the challenges that we have had to face in the last three or four years, new opportunities are being actively discussed in Armenia․ I will not reveal a secret if I say that the idea of joining the EU is one of them,” Mirzoyan said.
Armenian FM stated that the Armenian population aspires to align with Europe and is presently navigating the process.
Amid a worsening of Armenia's relations with Russia, Parliament Speaker Alen Simonyan, a prominent figure in PM Nikol Pashinyan's political circle, was the first to propose the notion on February 29. Simonyan asserted that Armenia boasts «much better democracy indicators» than certain EU member states.
