Armenian Leaders Commemorate 35th Anniversary of Independence, Highlighting Peace and Sovereignty

On August 23, Armenian leaders, including Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, President Vahagn Khachaturyan, and National Assembly Chairman Alen Simonyan, commemorated the 35th anniversary of Armenia's Declaration of Independence, emphasizing peace, sovereignty, and regional cooperation.

Nikol Pashinyan published a statement on social media, writing: "On August 23, 1990, the Supreme Council of the Armenian SSR adopted the Declaration of Independence of Armenia, marking the beginning of the process of establishing our independent statehood—the Republic of Armenia. The Declaration reflected the collective sentiments of the political and intellectual elite of that time, bore the influence of the Karabakh movement, and shaped the emerging independent Republic of Armenia. Its ideological provisions, formed under the Soviet Union since the 1950s, sought to instill a model of collective patriotism while constraining the local manifestation of national aspirations. This sociopsychology contributed to the Karabakh movement and shaped generations in the Republic of Armenia, ultimately creating challenges for the realization of genuine independence. After a comprehensive analysis, I have concluded that continuing the Karabakh movement is unacceptable, as it threatens Armenia's independence. The Republic of Armenia, under the ideology of Real Armenia, seeks peace with Azerbaijan, dialogue with Turkey, deeper relations with Georgia and Iran, and aims to become a real and constructive partner for the world. Our sovereign territory of 29,743 square kilometers is our most important value. Peace must remain institutionalized, and August 2025 marks the beginning of a peaceful and prosperous life for the Republic of Armenia. Glory to the fallen and long live the Republic of Armenia!"

President Vahagn Khachaturyan delivered a congratulatory address: "Dear citizens of the Republic of Armenia, 35 years ago, the Supreme Council of the Armenian SSR adopted the Declaration of Independence, restoring the idea of our statehood and opening the path to independence. The Declaration symbolized national will, a common goal, and a new future, and its adoption was finalized in the September 21, 1991 referendum. It remains a foundational program for democracy, the rule of law, human rights, military strengthening, and the modernization of education and the economy. Independence is not a gift but a daily responsibility: to strengthen statehood, build a fair society, and pass it on to future generations. I congratulate you on the 35th anniversary and urge our state to continue along the path of peace, security, and development."

Moreover, during the opening of the annual meeting of Armenia’s diplomatic missions abroad, Khachaturyan emphasized the strategic importance of recent regional developments: "We are experiencing a turning point for our region. The decisive and patient policy of the Armenian government has led to security, stability, and opportunities for the future of Armenia, its people, and the entire region. August 8 marked a diplomatic achievement, transitioning from conflict to peace, economic development, and regional prosperity. This result stems from difficult decisions, painstaking diplomacy, and the collective will of our people. While this is the beginning of a new chapter, we must prioritize Armenia’s security and national interests while remaining open to regional cooperation. Sustainable peace will unlock economic potential through trade, energy, and infrastructure initiatives, positioning Armenia as a regional hub. In light of rapidly changing geopolitical landscapes, our foreign policy must adapt, and ambassadors must promote regional attractiveness, economic and transit opportunities, and the 'Crossroads of the World' initiative. It is necessary to shift the international agenda from conflict to economic development."

Alen Simonyan, Chairman of the National Assembly, also extended congratulations: "Dear compatriots, on August 23, 1990, the Supreme Council of the Armenian SSR adopted the Declaration of Independence of Armenia, confirming the Armenian people's right to live freely and determine their destiny. Recent events have opened new opportunities, further strengthening Armenia’s independence and sovereignty. Peace underpins this independence and enables our country’s development. I congratulate you on this anniversary and wish our independence and peace to be eternal, ensuring a prosperous life for our citizens."
