Armenian Leadership Engages NATO Deputy Secretary General on Defense Reforms, Peacekeeping, And Regional Connectivity

On December 18, in a series of high-level meetings, Armenia’s Defense and Foreign Ministers, along with Prime Minister Pashinyan, engaged with NATO Deputy Secretary General Radmila Šekeriņska to review the ongoing defense reforms, strengthen the Armenia–NATO partnership, support regional stability, and explore initiatives like TRIPP and "Crossroads of Peace" aimed at unblocking regional communications and fostering cooperation with neighboring countries. Suren Papikyan, the Armenian Defense Minister, received Radmila Šekeriņska, NATO Deputy Secretary General.

During the meeting, they discussed the status and prospects of the Armenia-NATO partnership. Papikyan presented the ongoing defense reforms and the transformation of the Armed Forces, emphasizing NATO's significant role in the process. Šekeriņska reaffirmed NATO's readiness to continue developing the partnership. The interlocutors also exchanged views on regional and international security matters.

On the same day, Ararat Mirzoyan, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia, held talks with Šekeriņska. They commended the dynamics of Armenia-NATO cooperation, underlining that joint efforts had created solid foundations for further deepening the partnership. Mirzoyan expressed hope that the approval of the new Armenia–NATO partnership program would allow the development of relations under a more ambitious agenda.

Discussions touched upon various cooperation programs, including those aimed at strengthening Armenia’s resilience and advancing reforms, as well as Armenia’s participation in NATO peacekeeping missions. Mirzoyan also highlighted the latest developments in normalizing relations with neighboring countries and expressed appreciation for NATO’s support of Armenia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and regional peace. The interlocutors exchanged views on further steps toward institutionalizing peace and opportunities arising from unblocking regional communications.

During a meeting with Šekeriņska, Nikol Pashinyan, the Prime Minister of Armenia, discussed the development of Armenia-NATO partnership and cooperation. Pashinyan emphasized Armenia’s commitment to working with international partners, including NATO, to promote regional security and stability. Šekeriņska appreciated the partnership with Armenia and thanked the Prime Minister for previously receiving ambassadors accredited to NATO and for the constructive discussions.

The conversation also referred to the Washington Declaration signed between Armenia and Azerbaijan on August 8, along with subsequent developments. The interlocutors exchanged views on measures to unblock regional communications, including the TRIPP and "Crossroads of Peace" projects, as well as other topics of mutual interest.
