Armenian Official Optimistic About Border Opening, Calls for Turkish Commitment

At a briefing in the Armenian Parliament on June 26, Ruben Rubinyan, Vice Speaker of the National Assembly and the Special Representative of the Republic in the process of normalizing Armenian-Turkish relations, stated that Armenia would soon complete work on putting the infrastructure in order in the area of the Margara [Alican in Turkish] checkpoint. "Yerevan hopes that the Turkish side will also remain committed to the previously reached agreement on opening the border for citizens of third countries and holders of diplomatic passports," he said.
"The last agreement was that at the beginning of the tourist season, the land border should be open to third-country nationals and persons with diplomatic passports. The Armenian side is working to put in order the relevant infrastructure in Margara [a settlement in the Armavir region]; we will finish it very shortly. And we hope that the Turkish side will also comply with the agreement and that the agreements will be implemented this summer," Rubinyan said.
He assured that the normalization of bilateral relations does not stand still. However, at the moment, there is no agreement on the next meeting of the special representatives of Armenia and Turkey. "In such processes, where there is a lack of trust, it is extremely important that the agreements are implemented. If they are implemented, trust will increase; if they are not implemented, then, of course, it will decrease," he said.
