Armenians Protest Against Russian Occupation at 102nd Russian Military Base in Gyumri

On January 8, the Armenian non-parliamentary National Democratic Pole Bloc held a protest in front of the 102nd Russian military base in Gyumri. The participants of the action protested the blockade of Nagorno-Karabakh and blamed the Russian peacekeeping contingent for the situation on the Lachin corridor. They demanded that the Russian peacekeeping contingent fulfill its obligations regarding the Lachin Road. Protesters held placards reading "Russia is the Enemy," "De-occupation, De-Sovietization, De-Russification," "International Peacekeepers to Nagorno-Karabakh," and "No to Russian-Turkish Occupation." The action participants also declared that Armenia should leave the CSTO and say no to Russian occupation.
The Armenian police did not allow the protesters to approach the Russian military base. According to the press service of the Armenian Police, 65 people were detained during the action.
Earlier, on December 28, Caucasus Watch reported that local Armenians had gathered around Russia's Peacekeeping Headquarter, asking to speak with its commander Andrey Volkov. Armenians said they would blockade the 102nd Russian military base in Gyumri if the corridor was not opened.
