Azerbaijan And EU Officials Explore Energy, Transport, And Regional Connectivity Projects In Baku
During a series of high-level meetings in Baku on January 28, Azerbaijani officials and EU Director-General Gert Jan Koopman explored ways to deepen economic cooperation, expand renewable energy projects, strengthen Europe’s energy security via the Southern Gas Corridor, and advance regional transport and connectivity initiatives, including the Nakhchivan railway and the ambitious Caspian–Black Sea–Europe Green Energy Corridor. Mikayil Jabbarov, the Minister of Economy of Azerbaijan, stated in a post on X that Azerbaijan and the European Union discussed the current state of economic cooperation and its future development. During the meeting, Jabbarov stated that talks were held with Gert Jan Koopman, the Director-General for Enlargement and Eastern Neighbourhood of the European Commission, focusing on the existing framework of Azerbaijan–EU economic cooperation and prospects for expanding it, including possible EU support for Azerbaijan’s regional transport and connectivity initiatives. During separate discussions, Parviz Shahbazov, the Minister of Energy of Azerbaijan, met with Gert Jan Koopman to address cooperation in renewable energy, with an emphasis on expanding engagement with European companies in solar and wind power production and transmission. The parties exchanged views on the priorities of the strategic energy partnership, the role of the Southern Gas Corridor in strengthening Europe’s energy security, and the expansion of Azerbaijani gas supplies, noting that in 2025 Azerbaijan exported 12.8 billion cubic meters of gas to Europe. Regional electricity transmission projects were also discussed, including initiatives across the Black Sea and routes through Nakhchivan and Georgia, with particular attention paid to the "Caspian–Black Sea–Europe: Green Energy Corridor" project. It was also emphasized that the route connecting Nakhchivan, Azerbaijan, and Türkiye via the Zangezur Corridor was expected to serve as a strategic energy corridor linking Central Asia with Europe.
