Azerbaijan, Georgia Discuss Next Steps in Strategic Partnership
Azerbaijani Ambassador to Georgia Faig Guliyev met with Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on 14 August to discuss bilateral relations and the further development of the two countries’ strategic partnership.
The talks focused on the current level of bilateral cooperation and prospects for further expansion. The sides attached particular importance to agreements signed during Kobakhidze’s recent official engagement in Baku, which cover areas of direct relevance to Georgia-Azerbaijan economic and infrastructure cooperation.
The meeting takes place as the two countries continue to deepen cooperation in energy, transport and regional connectivity. During Kobakhidze’s May visit to Baku, Georgia and Azerbaijan signed agreements on natural gas supplies, electricity supplies and the transit of electricity through Georgian territory, as well as a protocol concerning the rehabilitation and construction of the railway section connecting Marabda with the Turkish border as part of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway project.
Transport cooperation remains another major part of the relationship. Georgia and Azerbaijan have been working to expand the role of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway and the wider Middle Corridor, which connects Central Asia and the South Caucasus with Türkiye and European markets. In June, the two countries also reaffirmed the importance of joint infrastructure and energy projects in the trilateral Georgia-Azerbaijan-Türkiye format.
The latest meeting continues to provide a platform for Baku and Tbilisi to follow up on recently signed agreements and coordinate their implementation. The Georgian-Azerbaijani bilateral strategic partnership has also become increasingly important to broader regional connectivity plans, particularly as both countries seek to strengthen transport, energy and trade links between the Caspian region, the South Caucasus, Türkiye and Europe.
