Azerbaijan Steps Up Anti-Terrorism Efforts with New European Protocol

On February 9, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev sanctioned the Law of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the Additional Protocol to the Convention on the Prevention of Terrorism of the Council of Europe.
The additional protocol aims to enhance international cooperation in the fight against terrorism. It envisages the establishment of contact points for swift information exchange concerning individuals traveling abroad for terrorist purposes. Furthermore, the Additional Protocol broadens the scope of criminal accountability for involvement in terrorist organizations or groups undergoing terrorist training, attempting to travel abroad for terrorist purposes, as well as fundraising for such journeys and facilitating them.
Through the Additional Protocol, several provisions aimed at implementing measures to prevent and counteract the flow of foreign terrorist fighters into conflict zones, in accordance with the UN Security Council resolution on "Threats to international peace and security as a result of terrorist acts," have been incorporated into the Council of Europe's Convention "On the Prevention of Terrorism."
