Azerbaijan Supplies Armenia with Oil via Georgia

The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) today shipped 1,220 tons of AI-95 motor fuel to Armenia, loaded into 22 tank trucks, Azerbaijani media reported. "Following President Ilham Aliyev's decision to lift restrictions on cargo transit from Azerbaijan to Armenia, which had been in place since the occupation, cargo shipments to the neighboring country are continuing," the Trend news agency reported.

The fuel was sent by an Azerbaijan Railways freight train from the Baku freight station to the Boyuk Kesik station. From there, the cargo will be transported via Georgia to Armenia.

However, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan confirmed that there are certain problems with the supply of petroleum products from Azerbaijan to Armenia via Georgia. Speaking to reporters on December 18, Pashinyan stated that cooperation with Azerbaijan on fuel purchases could continue, but "there are certain issues related to transit tariffs through Georgia".

He expressed hope that these issues would be resolved. "If these issues are not resolved, I hope that businesses will find alternative ways to ensure imports and exports if these transactions remain of interest," Armenian media quoted Pashinyan as saying. His words were reported by news.am, armenpress, and other outlets. The Azerbaijani publication Minval Politika claimed that Baku is discussing the possibility of restoring the railway line to the border with Armenia "in response to Tbilisi's tariff demarche".
