Azerbaijani MP Suggests Inviting Pashinyan to Baku

On May 7, during a session of the Azerbaijani Parliament, Zahid Oruj, the Chairman of the Legislature's Human Rights Committee, disclosed that following unsuccessful attempts to impose sanctions via the United Nations against Azerbaijan for its 2020 Karabakh victory, the US Congress has initiated a project aimed at penalizing Azerbaijani elected officials.
Oruj described these actions as being orchestrated by external forces that operate like an 'international legal mafia' against Azerbaijan relentlessly. Oruj highlighted the contrast between the country's past struggles with approximately 1 million refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) during the 1990s and its current situation, where it faces punitive measures despite its triumph. Oruj proposed several measures to fortify Azerbaijan's position in response to these sanctions. These include enhancing the 'Great Return' program, which facilitates the resettlement of displaced individuals in the Karabakh region, gradually progressing the border delimitation with Armenia, and striving to secure peace in the area.
Moreover, he emphasized bolstering the military-political alliance with Turkey and maintaining a non-confrontational stance towards regional states. Oruj also suggested taking a firm stand against those in the international community who oppose Azerbaijan, from former US Secretary of State James Baker to ex-NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen, labeling them as enemies of world peace. He proposed that while Azerbaijani doors should remain open to dialogue, such as inviting Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan to Baku, they must permanently close to those who support sanctions and oppose Azerbaijan's territorial claims.
