Azerbaijani MPs Demand Termination of Agreements with the US

On October 5, 43 members of the Azerbaijani Parliament submitted an appeal to Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, requesting the termination of two agreements with the United States and the suspension of USAID projects in Azerbaijan. The MPs also urged Minister Bayramov to immediately halt negotiations on new agreements with the US and to stop the extension of existing ones.
This appeal followed a letter from a group of US senators and representatives to Secretary of State Antony Blinken, urging Azerbaijan to release all political prisoners, including those of Armenian origin, ahead of the UN climate change conference in Baku. In response, the Azerbaijani MPs accused the US of bias against Azerbaijan.
The MPs' appeal, which referenced the October 3 letter from Congress, suggested that the US State Department had orchestrated the letter. The Azerbaijani lawmakers dismissed accusations of human rights violations and breaches of international humanitarian law as "false grounds."
The petition also criticized the US for its role as co-chair of the OSCE Minsk Group, alongside France, accusing both countries of attempting to maintain Azerbaijani lands under occupation. The MPs pointed out that the destruction of Azerbaijani cultural heritage, mosques, and historical monuments, along with the eradication of towns and villages, happened without any condemnation from Washington.
The MPs called on Minister Bayramov to reassess Azerbaijan’s relations with the US, urging the cancellation of several agreements and the suspension of US-funded projects in the country.
