Council Of Europe Reviews 32nd Report on Georgia: Russian Occupation, Human Rights Concerns, And Displacement Challenges
On 18 November, at the 1543rd meeting of the Committee of Ministers’ Deputies of the Council of Europe, the 32nd Consolidated Report of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe on the "Conflict in Georgia" was examined. Lasha Darsalia, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, participated in the meeting.
The Secretary General’s 32nd report outlined the serious security, human rights, and humanitarian situation in the Russian-occupied regions of Georgia and along the occupation line. Alain Berset, the Secretary General, presented the report and reaffirmed his strong support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Darsalia expressed gratitude for adopting the report, which underscores the continued relevance of the issue on the Council of Europe’s agenda. He briefed attendees on Russia’s violations of the EU-mediated 12 August 2008 ceasefire agreement and the further consolidation of Russian control. Darsalia stressed the importance of ensuring that internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugees can return to their homes safely and with dignity. He also cited rulings of the European Court of Human Rights confirming Russia’s occupation and effective control over these regions.
