Detained Azerbaijani Soldier Sentenced to 11 Years of Imprisonment in Yerevan

Agshin Babirov, one of the two Azerbaijani soldiers who crossed into the territory of Armenia and was detained by local residents and law enforcement officers, was sentenced to 11 years, six months, and 15 days of imprisonment in Yerevan.
Military serviceman Agshin Babirov was accused of illegally crossing the border and carrying firearms across the border. The case of the second Azerbaijani soldier Huseyn Akhundov is still under investigation.
On May 8, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan condemned the sentence passed on one of its two soldiers, Agshin Babirov, detained in Armenia a month ago, on April 9. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs claimed that the failure to respond to the confidence-building measures for the immediate return of the Armenian hostages, especially more than ten service members who crossed the border by mistake, shows that Armenia is not interested in reconciliation and confidence-building measures in the region.
Notably, on April 10, the Ministry of Defense of Azerbaijan released information about the disappearance of two soldiers on the Nakhchivan-Armenia border. In the Azerbaijani media, it was said that one of them arrived in the Syunik province, appealed to the villagers for help, and the second one was later detained near Kapan.
