Erdoğan Highlights 'Zangezur Corridor' as Vital Link Between Azerbaijan and Nakhchivan
On May 29, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, President of Turkey, stated that the Zangezur corridor represents not only a land link between Azerbaijan and Nakhchivan but also a new integration route extending to the Turkic world via Türkiye.
Speaking to journalists aboard his return flight from Azerbaijan, Erdoğan emphasized that the swift opening of the corridor would enhance the Caucasus region’s transport and energy infrastructure. He urged Iran to support these efforts, asserting that “every step taken, every door and corridor opened, will bring economic gains and foster closer ties between countries over time.”
The Turkish leader reiterated his strong support for Azerbaijan’s reconstruction and development initiatives in territories reclaimed following the Second Karabakh War, adding that Türkiye has long prioritized promoting stability, security, and prosperity in the South Caucasus. Erdoğan welcomed progress in peace negotiations between Azerbaijan and Armenia, describing the agreement on the draft peace treaty as a significant development and expressing hope for its prompt finalization.
Commenting on Ankara’s regional diplomacy, Erdoğan told Anadolu that Türkiye is advancing a gradual process of normalization with Armenia, stating that both sides would benefit from improved relations. He also reiterated Türkiye’s expectation that Iran would support initiatives concerning the Zangezur corridor, which he claimed would promote peace, stability, and development in the region.
