Espionage in Azerbaijan: Iranian Citizen Convicted in High-Security Case

On March 28, in the Baku Court of Serious Crimes, Gaedi Mohammad Najaf, an Iranian citizen accused of espionage within Azerbaijan's territory, received a verdict. He was sentenced to 12 years in a high-security penal colony. Gaedi Mohammad was apprehended by the State Security Service of Azerbaijan (SSS) in March of the preceding year.
Gaedi was assigned the task of gathering classified information with the intent to undermine Azerbaijan's security. "Based on extensive evidence, Gaedi orchestrated the collection and transmission of classified information detrimental to Azerbaijan's security on behalf of a foreign intelligence agency. This included obtaining personal data about Azerbaijani law enforcement personnel and establishing personal connections with them and their foreign counterparts. It was revealed that the country's intelligence agency was engaged in covert collaboration," the Ministry of Defense's release on March 14 stated. He faced charges under Article 276 (espionage) of Azerbaijan's Criminal Code.
