European Parliament Holds Special Session for Saakashvili

On February 2, the European Parliament conducted a special session to discuss Mikheil Saakashvili, Georgia's third president.
The MEPs highlighted that Georgian authorities bear full responsibility for Saakashvili's illness and that the EU is very worried about his failing health. According to Budget and Administration Commissioner Johannes Hahn, Saakashvili's judicial proceedings, as well as advancements in the field of medicine, have been closely followed by the EU.
He emphasized that the EU's concerns had been expressed on several occasions in speeches and official meetings between the EU delegation in Georgia and representatives of the EU member states and the Georgian Ministry of Justice, as well as during a dedicated meeting between the EU ambassador and the Minister of Justice and at the meeting of the EU-Georgia Association Council on September 29 of last year. He said that Saakashvili's right as a defendant in court, including the ability to show himself, should be maintained.
The Commissioner made a connection between the case and Georgia's promise to uphold its international obligations, including safeguarding the well-being of all prisoners and offering sufficient medical care by international standards. He noted that at present, the extent to which the medical facilities in Georgia can provide an accurate assessment of the former president's health and the adequacy of healthcare in the country is being contested by different sides. He believes it is in the best interests of all parties that the Georgian government seek medical advice from the uncontested international medical organization. "EU remains fully available to support its Georgian partners in this regard," Hann said.
Moreover, Moldovan President Maia Sandu stated, "Saakashvili should be sent overseas for medical care immediately." She said killing an opposition leader via torture is unthinkable for a government seeking EU membership.
