European Parliament Supports Armenia-Türkiye Dialogue, Urges Peace Progress
The European Parliament adopted its latest report on Türkiye, which addresses a range of political and human rights issues while also expressing support for Türkiye’s normalization process with Armenia and encouraging Ankara to take a more constructive role in advancing Armenian-Azerbaijani peace talks.
The report passed with 367 votes in favor, 74 against, and 188 abstentions during the plenary session.
The European Parliament welcomed the progress made so far in Armenian-Turkish normalization and encouraged further steps toward reconciliation, good-neighborly relations, and regional stability. It specifically called on Türkiye to speed up the implementation of previously agreed measures, such as opening the land border to diplomatic passport holders and citizens of third countries.
The Parliament also commended the temporary opening of the Turkish-Armenian border in the aftermath of the earthquake in Syria, which allowed Armenian humanitarian aid to pass through.
Importantly, the report urged Türkiye to use its influence on Azerbaijan to support the swift conclusion of a peace agreement with Armenia and prevent further military aggression against Armenian sovereignty. MEPs expressed hope that these diplomatic efforts would promote long-term peace and stability in the region.
The document also reiterated the European Parliament’s long-standing call for Türkiye to recognize the Armenian Genocide, framing it as an essential step toward genuine reconciliation between the Turkish and Armenian peoples. Additionally, the report called on Ankara to fully honor its obligations to preserve Armenian cultural heritage.
