Georgia Adopts New Defense Code

On September 21, the Parliament of Georgia adopted the Defense Code with 80 votes.
One of the main components of the new code is the revision of mandatory military service. In contrast to past procedures, all conscripts will fall under the sole control of the Ministry of Defense under the amended Defense Code, which will take effect in 2025. The price for delaying conscription will increase significantly, from EUR 697 to EUR 3490. Conscripts under the age of 25 will only be eligible for one of these one-year deferrals. Before, people could postpone their duty twice for a total of 18 months.
Another change concerns a clause that formerly permitted people to put off serving in the military if they were ordained as priests. Priests of the Georgian Orthodox Church will only be eligible for exemptions when the new legislation goes into effect. The new law also intends to improve the well-being of military personnel.
