Georgia Imports More Russian Natural Gas Than Azerbaijani Gas for the First Time in 18 Years
In the first quarter of 2025, imports of Russian natural gas to Georgia surpassed those from Azerbaijan for the first time since official records began.
For the 18 years that Georgia’s National Statistics Office has maintained such data, Azerbaijani gas had been the country’s primary import. However, in the first three months of 2025, Georgia purchased $100.6 million worth of natural gas from Russia, compared to $82.4 million from Azerbaijan.
This shift followed a broader trend of declining Azerbaijani gas imports in recent years. In the first nine months of 2024, Georgia bought $160.2 million worth of gas from Azerbaijan, a sharp decrease from the $313.5 million recorded during the same period in 2023. Meanwhile, imports from Russia rose significantly, with Georgia increasing its purchases by $90.1 million, marking a 6.5% growth compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.
