Georgian Leaders Set Conditions for Dialogue with Russia and Reject Opposition Criticism
On December 12, Shalva Papuashvili, the Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, stated that Georgia did not engage in dialogue with those who failed to respect the country’s national interests. Commenting on the possibility of a meeting between Irakli Kobakhidze, the Prime Minister of Georgia, and Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, in Ashgabat, Papuashvili emphasized that Tbilisi was open to communication only with counterparts who acknowledged Georgia’s core priorities. He stressed that “Georgia is ready to speak with anyone who respects the national interests of our people”, adding that these interests were defined by two main objectives: the unification of the country and the improvement of the population’s well-being. He underlined that "we do not engage in dialogue with those who do not respect these interests". Papuashvili further stated that Georgia did not intend to enter into dialogue with Moscow until "Georgia’s territorial integrity is restored" , linking any potential engagement directly to this condition.
Irakli Kobakhidze, the Prime Minister of Georgia, also commented on reactions surrounding the so-called "family photo," in which he appeared alongside Vladimir Putin. He dismissed the criticism, stating that "these speculations are absolutely frivolous and reflect the general lack of seriousness that currently reigns in the opposition and associated organizations" , and emphasized that providing any detailed comment on the matter was pointless.
