Mikheil Kavelashvili, elected as Georgia's sixth president, met with his Serbian counterpart. Following the meeting, Aleksandar Vučić noted during a joint press conference that this was the first visit by a Georgian representative of such rank to Serbia.

"It is a great honor for me to host the President of Georgia, Mikheil Kavelashvili. I would like to say that as a citizen and President of Serbia, I am very pleased, because for the first time in our history, we have the opportunity to host the President of Georgia," said Aleksandar Vučić. He noted that negotiations on a free trade agreement would soon begin and a Serbian embassy would open in Tbilisi, further deepening relations between the two countries. "We, from Serbia, will do everything possible to further improve and deepen our relations," he added.

Mikheil Kavelashvili thanked his counterpart for the invitation to "a country dear to Georgians". "I am glad to be in Belgrade, in Serbia, and very happy that you have shown me such warm hospitality, Mr. Alexander... I hope that we will strengthen the relations you mentioned even further," said Mikheil Kavelashvili. He also noted that "cooperation in the education system" and trade issues were discussed at the meeting.

At a briefing held with Vučić, Kavelashvili also touched on relations with the European Union. "Both our society and the international community are aware of this: current relations between Georgia and the European Union are far from favorable, because we believe that the attitude the European bureaucracy is showing toward our country is unfair and often constitutes a double standard. This is nothing new for our friendly country, Serbia".

Mikheil Kavelashvili was also hosted by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Serbia, Djurdj Matuc, and his accompanying delegation for a working dinner. The information was released by the press service of Mikheil Kavelashvili. According to the press service, the meeting focused on close cooperation between Georgia and Serbia and the prospects for expanding relations.

"Attention was focused on the friendly and traditional ties between the peoples, cultural proximity and common values. It was also noted that the common cultural basis and common geopolitical challenges facing Georgia and Serbia provide additional incentives for deepening relations and strengthening each other's positions in the international arena. The working dinner with the President of Georgia was attended by members of the delegation: Minister of Foreign Affairs Maka Bochorishvili, members of the Georgian Parliament - Irakli Mezurnishvili, Irma Zavradashvili, Guram Macharashvili, Georgian Ambassador to the Republic of Serbia Levan Beridze and representatives of the Georgian President's Administration," the presidential press service said.

Mikheil Kavelashvili arrived in Serbia on the evening of December 17. The delegation includes Foreign Minister Maka Bochorishvili, members of parliament Irakli Mezurnishvili, Irma Zavradashvili, Guram Macharashvili, as well as Georgian Ambassador to the Republic of Serbia Levan Beridze and representatives of the Georgian Presidential Administration.
