Georgian Public Broadcasting Adjusts to New Funding Reality, Cancels Seven Shows

On December 15, the Georgian Parliament approved amendments to the broadcasting law, outlining that GPB's annual budget from 2026 would be determined by multiplying the number of people employed in Georgia in the previous year by GEL 64. Additionally, any reduction in GPB's annual funding would require approval from the Board of Trustees.
On December 16, Georgian Public Broadcasting (GPB) made an announcement stating the cancellation of seven TV shows. The decision was attributed to changes in the funding model and emphasized the need to adapt to a new reality, including the additional capital costs associated with relocating to a new building.
GPB expressed concerns about the politicization of the issue and clarified that the restructuring aimed to address the evolving financial circumstances. The broadcaster highlighted its obligation to maintain continuous broadcasting while adapting to the altered funding conditions. The statement emphasized that all TV shows were equally valuable, and the cancellations resulted from necessary adjustments.
The canceled TV shows covered diverse topics, including education, culture, politics, agriculture, entertainment, and more. Among the affected programs were Teleschool, Code of the Day, Unbearable Lightness of Gorgiladze, Farm, Free Vision from Giorgi Gvimradze, Hoppla, We're Alive!, With Natalie and Datuna, and Men PLAY.
