Iran Appreciates Azerbaijan’s Stance During Israel-Iran Conflict
On June 26, Jeyhun Bayramov, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, received Mojtaba Demirchilou, the newly appointed Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Baku, who presented copies of his credentials during the meeting, according to the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry.
During the conversation, Bayramov congratulated Demirchilou on his appointment and wished him success in his diplomatic mission. The sides exchanged views on bilateral and multilateral cooperation, regional security, and the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran. Both emphasized the importance of maintaining political dialogue and contacts between the leaders of Azerbaijan and Iran to reinforce bilateral relations. Bayramov reiterated Azerbaijan’s concerns regarding the Israel-Iran escalation and extended condolences for the loss of Iran’s Chief of General Staff, other officials, and civilians. He stressed the necessity of resolving regional issues based on international law, dialogue, and diplomacy. The Iranian side expressed appreciation for Azerbaijan’s facilitation of land transit and for allowing Iranian and foreign citizens to cross the border. Both sides also reviewed other matters of mutual interest.
On the same day, Ilham Aliyev, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, held a phone conversation with Masoud Pezeshkian, the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, reiterating Azerbaijan’s stance on the recent confrontation between Iran and Israel. Aliyev voiced concern over rising regional tensions and extended condolences over the deaths of Iranian citizens, wishing a swift recovery to the injured. The Azerbaijani leader congratulated Pezeshkian on achieving a ceasefire and highlighted the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the region. Both leaders recalled Pezeshkian’s recent visit to Azerbaijan and underscored the significance of continuing joint efforts to implement the agreements reached during that visit. President Aliyev also renewed his invitation for Pezeshkian to attend the upcoming Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) Summit scheduled to take place in Azerbaijan in early July.
On June 27, Ilham Aliyev, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, formally received Mojtaba Demirchilou, the newly appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Islamic Republic of Iran, who presented his credentials to the head of state. During their conversation, President Aliyev fondly recalled his recent phone conversation with President Pezeshkian and their prior discussions in Baku, describing the visit as marking a new stage in the development of Azerbaijan-Iran relations. Aliyev emphasized that Pezeshkian’s remarks during his visit were positively received by the Azerbaijani public and reiterated that Azerbaijan had condemned the recent escalation between Iran and Israel, extending condolences for Iranian casualties. The president addressed rumors and misinformation spread by certain groups and media outlets attempting to harm Azerbaijan-Iran relations in the context of the tensions, dismissing these claims as baseless.
In response, Mojtaba Demirchilou conveyed that the supreme leadership of the Islamic Republic of Iran attaches great significance to deepening relations with Azerbaijan. He noted that the ties between the two countries rest on friendship, neighborliness, and brotherhood. Demirchilou expressed Iran’s gratitude for Azerbaijan’s principled stance during the recent Israel-Iran confrontation, stating that Iran trusts Azerbaijan will never permit its territory to be used against Iran. The ambassador also appreciated Azerbaijan’s efforts to facilitate transit for Iranian and foreign citizens.
The meeting concluded with comprehensive discussions on the prospects for bilateral cooperation in various fields, including politics, economy, trade, culture, and humanitarian affairs. The parties also reviewed infrastructure projects, such as the development of the North-South transport corridor, the construction of a road bridge over the Araz River connecting the Aghband and Kelale checkpoints, and the overall enhancement of the Araz transport corridor.
