Iran Rejects Zangezur Corridor Plan, Calls for Respecting Regional Sovereignty

On September 9, Nasser Kanaani, the Spokesman of Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated, "We are also against any border changes that undermine countries' political independence, and we are against changing international borders."
Kanaani made this statement during a briefing, addressing recent developments concerning the Zangezur Corridor and its significance following Russian President Vladimir Putin's recent visit to Azerbaijan. He also referenced the discussions surrounding the Caucasus region, including remarks by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, the Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson.
Kanaani noted that various opinions had been voiced, some of which opposed developing relations with Iran. He stressed the importance of referring to the exact text of these statements.
He further emphasized that the Islamic Republic of Iran would continue to support efforts to resolve traffic bottlenecks on connecting roads and foster peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia. "Peace in the Caucasus is for the benefit of all the countries in the region," Kanaani stated, warning that "some powers outside the region want to turn the Caucasus into an unstable region, and their priority is not peace."
Kanaani reiterated Iran's support for enhancing regional cooperation within the 3+3 framework, adding that meetings have already been held and that more negotiations are planned.
