Pashinyan Announces Shift in Armenian History Education Focus

On July 11, the Armenian government decided during its meeting to rename the school subject "History of the Armenian people" to "History of Armenia."
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan explained that this change aims to place the state at the center of public life. He emphasized the distinction between the two titles, stating, "How do I see the difference between 'History of the Armenian people' and 'History of Armenia'? 'History of Armenia' narrates the existence and development of the state, even during periods when the state did not exist. Whereas, 'History of the Armenian people' focuses on the history of the people, including times when the state existed. This conceptual difference is significant, and our main priority is the strategy of the state's existence."
Pashinyan further elaborated that all actions should align with the concept of "real Armenia," aiming to gradually phase out approaches that contradict the state's interests. He emphasized that the name change for the subject would draw attention not only to the history of the Armenian state but also to the history of the Armenian people.
The Prime Minister underscored that this shift represents a move from an ethnic-based approach to a state-based approach. He stated, "We are placing statehood, independence, and sovereignty at the core of our strategy and policy. The concept of the state involves entirely different thinking, culture, and perspective. We must acknowledge that this concept may not be universally understood at all times."
Pashinyan highlighted the need for significant efforts by the government and state structures to facilitate this transition, emphasizing the shift from being an emotionally driven populace to a more statesmanlike population.
