Pashinyan Calls for Armenian Church to Unite Society While Remaining Politically Neutral

| News, Politics, Armenia

On January 10, Nikol Pashinyan, the Prime Minister of Armenia, stated that Armenian society largely shared the view that the Armenian Apostolic Church should abstain from political activity. During the video address published on his Facebook page, Pashinyan stated that while the inadmissibility of the Church’s participation in politics was widely discussed and broadly understood by the public, this debate raised a separate question regarding whether the Armenian Apostolic Holy Church should have any role in the country’s social and political life, and if so, what that role should be. "I believe that yes, it should," Pashinyan stated, emphasizing that the Church should serve as a space where individuals ceased to be opposition-minded or pro-government and where even the most determined political opponents could stand together during national church holidays.

He stated that within the Church, people should be able to participate side by side in liturgy, pray together, receive communion together, and commune with "our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ" without political division. Pashinyan emphasized that he envisioned the Church fulfilling a unifying societal function, stating that its primary mission should be the dissemination of the teachings of Jesus Christ and the values He professed in everyday life. "This is how I envision the relationship of the Armenian Apostolic Holy Church with our social and political life," he stated. In the same statement, Nikol Pashinyan, the Prime Minister of Armenia, reiterated his position regarding church leadership, stating that Ktrich Nersisyan was not the Catholicos of All Armenians and that decisions made by him in that capacity were therefore invalid. He emphasized that His Eminence Bishop Gevork Saroyan continued to serve as the Primate of the Masiatsotn Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Holy Church.
