Pashinyan Engages EU Leaders on Peace Process, Media Support, and Economic Cooperation
On July 14, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan arrived in Brussels for a working visit, holding multiple high-level meetings with European leaders. During a trilateral meeting, Pashinyan, European Council President António Costa, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening EU-Armenia relations. They welcomed Armenia's reform program and expressed strong support for the country’s sovereignty, highlighting the new EU-Armenia Partnership Agenda and progress in visa liberalization.
The EU leaders reiterated their commitment to Armenia’s long-term development, announcing that EU investments under the Global Gateway strategy are expected to reach EUR 2.5 billion. They also cited the EUR 270 million Resilience and Growth Plan, which increased EU funding to Armenia by 50%. The EU reaffirmed its support for Armenia’s Crossroads of Peace initiative and welcomed its continued engagement in peace negotiations with Azerbaijan and normalization with Türkiye. The leaders also agreed to launch EU-Armenia Security and Defence consultations and pledged a new EUR 1.5 million package to support Armenia’s independent media.
In a separate meeting, Pashinyan and EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos discussed the new Armenia-EU Partnership Agenda. Kos reiterated the EU’s support for Armenia’s reforms, and Pashinyan emphasized the importance of EU assistance in economic diversification and infrastructure. Later, Pashinyan met with Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever to discuss strengthening trade and investment.
The working visit concluded after a private meeting between Pashinyan and French President Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace. They discussed bilateral priorities and ongoing joint programs, with Pashinyan briefing Macron on the discussions held in Brussels and reaffirming Armenia’s commitment to deepen cooperation with the EU.
