Putin Urges Georgia to Uphold Friendship Traditions, Signature Collection Begins in Tbilisi to Restore Ties

On May 7, Russian President Vladimir Putin sent a message marking the 80th anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany, urging the Georgian people to preserve the longstanding traditions of friendship and mutual assistance.
Putin sent similar congratulatory messages to leaders of Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) member countries. In his messages to the peoples of Georgia and Moldova, he emphasized the importance of safeguarding the traditions of friendship and mutual support passed down through generations, urging them "not to let our shared historical heritage be forgotten or allow discord to divide friendly nations."
Additionally, a resolution to initiate a signature collection campaign supporting the restoration of diplomatic relations with Russia was signed during a roundtable in Tbilisi, attended by representatives of Georgian political organizations.
Mamuka Pipia, Secretary of the Solidarity for Peace Party, emphasized the need for more active people’s diplomacy, stating that citizens must "grant the state a mandate to engage in direct negotiations with Russia." Pipia noted that individuals with connections to Russia, particularly in tourism and business, are especially supportive of this initiative.
Fridon Injia, Chairman of Samegrelo Elders, stressed the importance of Georgia clearly defining its position to "represent the region with dignity and safeguard the country’s interests."
The resolution highlighted Georgia’s inability to independently address its current economic and social challenges and underscored the need to strengthen friendly relations with neighboring countries, declaring, "It is time to restore good neighborly relations with Russia."
