Russia Expresses Readiness for Russo-Georgian Normalization

During the briefing on June 26, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated that Russia is ready to continue Russo-Georgian normalization and supports any initiatives from Tbilisi in this direction.
Asked about the Georgian party "Solidarity for Peace" calling for the restoration of diplomatic relations between Georgia and Russia, and whether Russia would agree if Georgia proposed such an initiative, Zakharova stressed: "We continue to believe that this (normalization of relations) is in the interests of our two peoples. We support any initiatives that are aimed at Russian-Georgian normalization. In this regard, we welcome the Solidarity for Peace initiative. We are ready to follow this path."
Zakharova recalled that the break in diplomatic relations was not initiated by Russia, but "by the Saakashvili regime." She noted, "Since then, the restoration of bilateral relations has been subject to conditions that contradict the existing realities in the region."
In addition, Zakharova stressed that "in 2012, the Georgian authorities made a proposal to start the process of normalization of bilateral relations, and Russia immediately supported it at that time." She reiterated Russia's stance, saying, "We continue to believe that this is in the interests of our two peoples, who are bound by common history, culture, close economic ties and millions of threads of human destiny."
