Russia Works With Azerbaijan on Russian Detainees; Stresses Armenia’s EAEU Membership and Trilateral Agreements
On August 13, Alexey Fadeyev, Deputy Director of the Information and Press Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry, stated that Moscow was cooperating with Baku on possible options for releasing Russian citizens detained in Azerbaijan. During a briefing, Fadeyev commented on the trilateral declaration signed in Washington on August 8, emphasizing that when unblocking communication routes through Armenia’s Syunik region, the presence of Russian border guards and Armenia’s membership in the EAEU must be considered.
Fadeyev stressed that Russia considers the trilateral agreements signed by the leaders of Russia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan between 2020 and 2022 to be relevant, as no party has withdrawn from them. He reiterated Moscow’s readiness to assist its partners in normalizing relations and stated that the involvement of extra-regional forces should support the peace agenda rather than create new dividing lines. Regarding the "Trump road," Fadeyev said the ministry would reserve its opinion until the project’s specifics were made public. He also noted that Russia maintains regular contact with Iran on South Caucasus security issues.
