Russian FM: Armenia's EU Aspirations Clash with EAEU Membership

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Armenia’s intent to join the European Union (EU) is incompatible with its membership in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), highlighting the differing principles that govern these organizations.
Speaking at a press conference summarizing Russia’s 2024 diplomatic efforts, Lavrov pointed out the contradictions between the two blocs, as reported by Russian TASS.
“These are two distinct free trade zones with separate systems for reducing or eliminating duties and tariffs. They simply do not align,” he said.
Lavrov referred to remarks made by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk, who had previously noted the incompatibility of Armenia’s EU aspirations with its obligations under the EAEU.
The Russian Foreign Minister’s comments come amid discussions about Armenia’s growing ties with the EU and its continued participation in the EAEU, a bloc led by Moscow aimed at fostering economic integration among its members.
