Russian Foreign Ministry: "Moscow Aims Develop Alliance with Abkhazia and South Ossetia/Tskhinvali Region"

In response to a media request on February 13, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that Russia aims to continue the comprehensive development of allied relations with [separatist] South Ossetia [Tskhinvali Region] and Abkhazia.
"Having recognized the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia 15 years ago, the Russian Federation guaranteed their reliable protection and progressive development, making them modern and self-sufficient states. Most of the population of Abkhazia and South Ossetia has Russian citizenship and supports a policy of deepening the alliance with Russia. We aim to continue the course towards the comprehensive development of allied relations with the young republics of Transcaucasia," Zakharova added.
She recalled that Moscow was trying to negotiate with Tbilisi on the non-use of force by Georgia against Abkhazia and South Ossetia. "The security of Abkhazia and South Ossetia is especially important for us. As you know, Russian military bases operate on their territory, and we jointly guard state borders to avoid possible provocations from outside. We are trying to get Georgia's consent to the non-use of force against these countries. This is the basis of stability in the region," Zakharova stated.
