Saakashvili's Imprisonment Not Discussed During US Senator's Visit, Embassy Clarifies

On August 13, the US Embassy issued a statement clarifying that the issue of former President Mikheil Saakashvili was not addressed during Senator Jeanne Shaheen and Representative Mike Turner's recent visit.
The Embassy emphasized that neither disinformation nor speculation helps resolve disagreements. It reiterated that Saakashvili's situation was not a topic of discussion during the recent visit. The Embassy further stated that the United States desires a strong relationship with Georgia, noting that the first step toward this must come from the Georgian government. They added, "We wait to hear its proposal."
Notably, Saakashvili recently claimed that his illegal and unjust political imprisonment was raised many times at various meetings during the visit. Saakashvili also mentioned that the visit was part of a very important bipartisan policy aimed at preventing election fraud and expressed his satisfaction that Senator Shaheen frequently speaks about him, while Mike Turner had recently sent a formal letter to the State Department requesting his release.
