Samad Seyidov Comments on Azerbaijan’s Position Toward PACE
On September 10, Samad Seyidov, the Chairman of the Milli Majlis Committee on International Relations and Interparliamentary Ties, stated that Azerbaijan has not closed its doors to PACE (Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe) but expects respect for its position. Seyidov emphasized at the committee meeting that anti-Azerbaijani forces took actions that compelled the Azerbaijani delegation to suspend its activities in PACE. He stated, "We have clearly stated our position. Azerbaijan will not cooperate with forces that are against our country". Notably, in January 2024, PACE voted not to ratify the credentials of Azerbaijan's parliamentary delegation. The decision was based on concerns over Azerbaijan's failure to fulfill major commitments. The resolution cited examples of a "lack of cooperation," such as the refusal of Azerbaijani authorities to allow PACE rapporteurs to meet with detained individuals and the exclusion of observers from the 2023 presidential election. In retaliation, Azerbaijan suspended its cooperation with PACE, accusing the Assembly of bias, discrimination, and an "unbearable atmosphere of racism, Azerbaijanophobia, and Islamophobia". Azerbaijan's delegation leader, Samad Seyidov, criticized PACE for being used as a platform to target member states and for harboring biased groups that abuse the organization's principles.
