
Separatist South Ossetia Struggles to Pay Off Energy Debts to Russia

Atsamaz Kabisov, the Director of the Energoresurs-South Ossetia State Enterprise, said that the debt of separatist South Ossetia [Tskhinvali Region] to Russia for electricity and gas is more than EUR 11 million.
"We owe more than EUR 4.9 million to the Russian Federation for gas and EUR 6.7 million for electricity. We have an agreement signed in 2017, according to which the debt amounted to EUR 3.5 million. The amount was payable. Since 2018, EUR 1.6 million have been paid," Kabisov added.
"In April, a payment of EUR 500,000 will be made, leaving about EUR 5 million to electricity suppliers," he noted. According to Kabisov, negotiations will be held with the Russian side to pay off the remaining amount.
