Serbia Aims To Increase Azerbaijani Gas Imports To 2 Million Cubic Meters In 2025–2026
Serbian Minister of Mining and Energy, Dubravka Đedović-Handanović, discussed deepening energy cooperation with Azerbaijan on July 28. She characterized the partnership as dynamic and strategically important, leading to the diversification of gas supplies for Serbia. A key project is the planned construction of a gas power plant near Niš, with a memorandum of understanding expected soon.
During the last heating season, Azerbaijan supplied Serbia with 1 to 1.7 million cubic meters of gas daily. For the upcoming season, the agreement provides a fixed volume of 100,000 cubic meters per day with flexible options up to 1 million. Serbia plans to increase imports to 2 million cubic meters per day for the 2025–2026 winter. The Southern Gas Corridor is vital to this strategy, with an agreement for up to 400 million cubic meters annually until 2026 and a potential increase to 1 billion cubic meters.
To further diversify, Serbia plans to link its network to North Macedonia, providing access to the TANAP and TAP pipelines. While no Azerbaijani companies are currently investing in Serbia’s renewable sector, Đedović-Handanović confirmed that opportunities are open for partnership in solar, wind, or hydrogen projects, as Serbia aims to generate 45% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030.
