Survey Shows Rising Interest Among Russians to Remain in Armenia Amid Ongoing Russia's War in Ukraine

At a press conference on June 13, Martin Galstyan, the Chairman of the Central Bank of Armenia, stated that according to polls, the number of Russians wishing to stay in Armenia for more than six months has increased. "Such dynamics are fixed by surveys conducted in the first quarter of this year," the head of the financial regulator explained.
"We are talking, of course, about the polls that I have seen because it is very difficult to predict people's behavior. One way or another, they testify that a significant part of the arriving citizens does not expect an early end to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict [Russia-Ukraine war], so they expect to stay for longer periods," Galstyan noted.
The official informed that the volume of deposits of non-resident individuals in the republic approximately doubled over the year, amounting to 1 trillion 132 billion drams (about $ 2.9 billion). "However, since the beginning of the year, it has shown a modest growth - 0.5%," he said.
The Chairman of the Central Bank suggested that the slowdown in the growth of deposits may also be affected by a purely technical detail։ banks can transfer relocators from non-residents to residents as they receive the appropriate status. "This issue should be considered separately," Galstyan added.
