Uganda Seeks Cooperation with Azerbaijan in Mineral Exploration
On August 28, John Mulimba, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of Uganda, stated that Uganda expects to conclude an agreement with the government of Azerbaijan on cooperation in the fields of mineral exploration, production, and infrastructure development.
Mulimba recalled that during the Ugandan delegation’s visit to Azerbaijan, a meeting was held at the Ministry of Energy, where prospects for cooperation in the oil and gas sector, mining, and hydropower were discussed. "At the ministry, we discussed a number of areas of cooperation between the governments of Azerbaijan and Uganda, in particular in the energy sector. Uganda has rich water resources, and along the Nile River, there are several waterfalls suitable for the construction of hydroelectric power plants. Some of them have already been successfully implemented," he stated. The minister emphasized that Uganda sought to benefit from Azerbaijan’s experience in building further hydroelectric power plants.
"In addition, [at the Ministry of Energy] we also talked about mineral exploration. Uganda is rich in mineral reserves. For example, we have a lot of gold; we have lithium. We have rare earth metals, in particular, cobalt. We also have iron ore. Therefore, we are looking forward to signing an agreement on cooperation and joint activities in the field of exploration and production of minerals, and construction of infrastructure," Mulimba added.
