UK Imposes Sanctions on Kadyrovs and Chechen Officials; Kadyrov Denounces Measures
On September 3, London added Aimani Kadyrova, the mother of Ramzan Kadyrov, and the Akhmat Kadyrov Foundation that she heads to the UK sanctions list. Kadyrova was designated as an "engaged person" because she "is or was involved in the destabilization of Ukraine" by supporting "the Russian government’s program for the military-patriotic re-education of Ukrainian children" in territories controlled by Moscow. Zamid Chalayev, the commander of the special police regiment named after Hero of Russia A. A. Kadyrov in the Ministry of Internal Affairs for the Chechen Federal Republic, was also sanctioned, as confirmed by a UK Treasury document. Under the restrictions, the assets of those targeted are frozen in the UK, and they are banned from entering the country.
Ramzan Kadyrov, the leader of Chechnya, condemned the decision and accused London of "absurdity and hypocrisy." He stated that his mother, Aimani Kadyrova, lived a peaceful life far from politics and "has never fought, never held a weapon, and has dedicated her life to good deeds." Kadyrov emphasized that, as president of the foundation, she consistently supported victims of wars, the poor, and the disadvantaged worldwide, questioning, "Where are the loud European slogans about the principles of democracy?"
Regarding Zamid Chalayev, Kadyrov underlined his loyalty and service, stating that "he is one of the most devoted sons of his people and a defender of the peace of citizens." He criticized the sanctions, arguing that "to punish him with sanctions for honestly fulfilling his duty means demonstrating your fear of strong and principled people." According to Kadyrov, these measures showed that the West acted not on morality or law, but on "hatred and Russophobia." He added that Western governments "are not fighting enemies, but women, mothers and those who help the disadvantaged," calling it "the lowest level of rotten Western policy, a clear demonstration of weakness and double standards."
For the Kadyrovs, Ramzan Kadyrov stressed, the sanctions "mean nothing." He declared, "They cannot deprive us of faith and commitment to the ideals of goodness and justice. We have lived and will live as our fathers taught us, and we will always help those who need support. These restrictions will remain just pieces of paper that will turn to dust and will only be in effect in the West, where we have not had and will not have any assets."
