Union Condemns Call to Limit Rights of Armenians in Separatist Abkhazia
On July 11, the Union of Political Parties and Public Organizations responded to a call from Dzhansukh Adleiba, a leader of the National Liberation Movement "Liberty," who urged limiting the rights of residents of Armenian nationality in separatist Abkhazia.
The Union's commentary condemned Adleiba's statement, which asserted that citizens of Abkhazia of Armenian nationality have no moral and legal right to take part in voting and occupy high positions in the government. The Union reminded Adleiba that, according to Article 12 of the Constitution of the [de-facto] Republic of Abkhazia, "everyone is equal before the law and the court regardless of race, nationality, sex, language, origin, property and official status, place of residence, attitude to religion, beliefs, ideologies, and other circumstances." This legal provision ensures that citizens of Abkhazian, Armenian, and other nationalities have equal rights in all aspects of life in Abkhazia.
The Union emphasized that this equality united the citizens during the Patriotic War of the people of Abkhazia, where individuals of different origins fought alongside Abkhazians against Georgian troops who invaded under nationalist slogans. Many Armenians, who fought and died for the common freedom, earned the high title of Hero of Abkhazia. This history affirms the moral right of Armenian citizens to be proud of their Abkhazian citizenship.
Additionally, the Union reminded Adleiba that his public statement and those of his supporters are discriminatory and degrade the dignity of a group of persons based on their nationality.
