Uniper Monitors Caspian Gas Expansion in Caucasus; SOCAR Engages Regional And International Partners
On October 23, Rashad Huseynli, the Head of Uniper’s Azerbaijani Office, emphasized Uniper’s active monitoring of Caspian gas supply expansion and its decade-long partnership with SOCAR, while Rovshan Najaf, the President of SOCAR, conducted high-level meetings in Ashgabat with regional and international energy companies, discussing strategic cooperation, energy transition, digitalization, green energy initiatives, and Europe’s energy security through Azerbaijan’s gas exports.
Rashad Huseynli stated that the German energy company Uniper continued active engagement with its partners and assessed prospects for expanding gas supplies from the Caspian region. Huseynli recalled that in July 2022, the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev signed a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at doubling Azerbaijani gas exports to Europe. "Uniper closely follows this process and maintains close contacts with partners and market participants regarding potential additional gas supplies from the Caspian region," Huseynli emphasized. He noted that Uniper and the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) have enjoyed a partnership spanning more than a decade, based on regular knowledge exchange and shared strategic objectives. "At the latest meeting of the Coordination Committee in Baku, a new cooperation program for 2025–2026 was approved. It includes technical experience exchange, initiatives to promote women to leadership positions, and educational programs. These initiatives complement traditional cooperation in the gas sector and reflect our shared commitment to Europe’s energy future," he stated. Huseynli also mentioned that Uniper annually purchases approximately 1.5 billion cubic meters of natural gas from Azerbaijan through the Southern Gas Corridor, whose final link is the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP). "The gas is received in Italy — Uniper became the first German company to start purchasing gas through TAP in 2020. The Italian gas network is closely connected with Europe’s infrastructure, which allows additional supplies to contribute to the energy security of neighboring countries. Through long-term contracts, Uniper ensures that a significant share of volumes remains available to customers in Germany and other European countries on flexible terms," he added.
During the 30th International Conference and Exhibition "Turkmenistan Oil and Gas – 2025" in Ashgabat, Rovshan Najaf held a series of bilateral meetings with senior representatives of several energy companies and organizations. The meetings included Uzbekneftegaz, QazaqGaz, Dragon Oil, Chimcomplex, Yug-Neftegaz, the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC), and the Chamber of Commerce and Investment of Afghanistan. During the discussions, the sides reviewed existing partnership relations, explored prospects for future cooperation, and exchanged views on issues of mutual interest. Separately, Najaf also met with Tor Ove Lussand, the Vice President for Northern Europe of Norway’s ABB. During the meeting, both sides discussed cooperation on energy transition, digitalization, and innovative technologies in resource management. The Norwegian delegation was briefed on the modernization of Azerbaijan’s energy industry, ongoing efforts to reduce carbon emissions, and green energy projects implemented jointly with international partners.
