US Advocates for Monitoring Mission in Nagorno-Karabakh, Praises Armenia's Rome Statute Ratification

At a traditional briefing on October 3, Vedant Patel, the Deputy Head of the Press Service of the US State Department, said that the United States will continue to play a role in the highest level of interaction with the leadership of Azerbaijan and Armenia to achieve a decent and sustainable peace.
"You also saw that we reiterated our call for the establishment of a long-term independent international monitoring mission in Nagorno-Karabakh last week. The goal is to ensure transparency and certainty that the rights and security of ethnic Armenians will be protected," Patel said.
Regarding Armenia's ratification of the Rome Statute, Patel noted, "We respect the right of every country to join the International Criminal Court, and we appreciate the many states, including Armenia, that have committed to ensure justice and have taken responsibility for genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity."
In response to a question about Russia's military presence in the Karabakh region, Patel repeated the State Department's initial assessment that peacekeepers did not play a productive role last month. "Such involvement is still worrying," he said.
