US Confirms Armenia's Request for Nuclear Power Plant Agreement

On 22 August, the US State Department confirmed that Armenia had applied for an agreement crucial to the export of American equipment and the construction of a nuclear power plant in the country.
"The US government does not share details of the negotiation process, but we can report that the State Department is giving Armenia's application for the 123 agreement due consideration and it is undergoing appropriate review," a US State Department spokesperson added.
The spokesperson noted that the State Department has not provided a timeline for the review or additional details, as this is an internal process involving US government negotiations with other countries.
Notably, Armen Grigoryan, the secretary of Armenia's Security Council, has previously discussed the application. In July, Grigoryan said: 'If we are talking about the construction of a new nuclear power plant, the process has entered a substantive stage. We are discussing the legal basis with the US, without which we cannot move forward. At the moment I can say that the ball is in the US court. We expect that the internal procedures in the US will be completed and then we will start working".
