US State Department Criticizes Georgian Dream's Anti-Western Rhetoric; Warns of Isolation

During a daily press briefing on May 8, U.S. State Department spokesman Matthew Miller reiterated his concerns about the foreign agents law favored by the ruling Georgian Dream party.
He emphasized the U.S. government's grave concerns about the anti-Western stance of the Georgian Dream leadership. Miller stated, "This rhetoric from the GD leadership is putting Georgia on a dangerous path. We believe it jeopardizes its path to Euro-Atlantic integration and clearly poses risks to bilateral relations between our two nations."
Miller declined to comment further on Georgian Dream's proposal to compile a list of individuals accused of engaging in violence, blackmail, threats, and other unlawful activities, including those who publicly support such actions.
On May 9, at another briefing, Miller condemned recent incidents in Georgia where civil society members, opposition activists, and journalists have been subjected to harassment and physical attacks for protesting the Foreign Agents Law. He underscored the U.S. State Department's deep concern about these actions and called for independent and prompt investigations. Discussing the broader context of U.S.-Georgian relations, Miller noted, "We have had a successful partnership with Georgia for more than 30 years. We are eager to continue our cooperation. But for that to happen, the Georgian government must change its current direction.
Once again, Miller refrained from announcing any specific actions the State Department might consider in response to the latest developments surrounding the Foreign Agents Act.
