US to Deploy Army Adviser to Armenia, Deepening Defense Ties

The US Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights Uzra Zeya, during her visit to Armenia from July 13-16, confirmed media reports about the upcoming deployment of a US Army resident adviser to Armenia's Ministry of Defense.
“Yes, I can confirm this,” Zeya said in an interview with Armenian media outlet Hetq. "This is a welcome development, and I encourage you to follow up with our ambassador and press team. We welcome the deepening defense and civilian security cooperation between the US and Armenia, which is part of the spirit embodied in the historic upgrade in U.S.-Armenia relations to a strategic partnership."
When asked about the impact of Armenia’s CSTO (Collective Security Treaty Organization) membership on deepening US-Armenia defense cooperation and whether withdrawing from the Russian-led security bloc would boost this cooperation, Zeya responded: “Armenia’s CSTO membership is a decision for the Armenian government to make. We respect that decision. However, I would note that our defense and civilian security cooperation has continued to deepen even while Armenia remains a CSTO member. Lastly, the United States sees no evidence that Russia's military presence contributes to a more peaceful and stable South Caucasus region.”
