US Warns Georgia of Possible Sanctions Over Election Concerns

At a press briefing on November 4, US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller stated that the US stands with the people of Georgia and supports their aspirations for Euro-Atlantic integration.
He emphasized that the US would not hesitate to implement further measures if the ruling Georgian Dream government continues to take undemocratic actions. Miller reiterated steps already taken by the State Department in response to the Georgian government’s actions. “We have put, as you know, under review a significant amount of assistance that we provide to the Government of Georgia and have suspended $95 million of that assistance,”
Miller stated, “We will continue to look at whether there are additional measures that would be appropriate; and if so, we won’t hesitate to use them.” However, he clarified that there were no current announcements on potential additional sanctions or actions the US might take.
